Communication is the key to relationships, and relationships are the key to success in business.
Venture capitalist and entrepreneur Rich Stromback , is a world-class communicator and one of the most influential people invited to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. As we quoted in a previous post “Is Networking a Waste of Time?” Stromback said in an interview, “Opportunities do not float like clouds in the sky. They are attached to people.”
Communication is key, but TIME is the ultimate limiting resource.
Advantages Of Real Time Communication
The big advantage of a phone call versus a letter (remember postal letters?) is that the conversation is two-directional in brief components with immediate response. The communication goes back and forth like a Ping Pong game — or at least it SHOULD. (You know how boring a verbose monologue is, especially when you are the on the receiving end Twitter has introduced a hybrid with near real-time brief micro-messages, which could be exchanged either in real-time — or not. Believe it or not, (patient) people used to play chess by post cards — no kidding
Asynchronous Communication Has Advantages As Well
In my opinion the biggest advantage is the avoidance of interruptions in the middle of a project or another call. A hybrid solution would be to use asynchronous communication, such as email or voice mail, to arrange an appointment for a live conversation in real time — maybe even in person.
The leaders at Apple are famous for saying Culture Beats Strategy. What do you think?
According to the Leadership and Influence Blog, http://www.leadershipandinfluenceblog.com/
When Apple consisted of just the two Steve’s (Jobs & Wozniak) they knew the kind of culture they wanted to create and it influenced everything they did from the people they hired, the advertising campaigns they ran and the products they created. Their culture paved the way for their pass success and it continues to influence and fuel Apple’s current growth and success.
Greg McKeown wrote an interesting article in the Harvard Business Review called, “99% of Networking is a Waste of Time.” He was quoting venture capitalist, entrepreneur and world-class super-networker Rich Stromback.
Despite the startling title, McKeown pointed out:
Building the right relationships — networking — is critical in business. It may be an overstatement to say that relationships are everything, but not a huge one. The people we spend time with largely determine the opportunities that are available to us. As venture capitalist and entrepreneur Rich Stromback told me in a series of interviews, “Opportunities do not float like clouds in the sky. They are attached to people.”
Those of us who place high value on both our time and relationships can do well to heed the suggestions made by Stromback in a series of interviews summarized in the HBR article: https://hbr.org/2015/01/99-of-networking-is-a-waste-of-time
